Overview

About the Unit

The Investigative Division of the Beckley Police Department is responsible for investigating both misdemeanor and felony offenses. After patrol takes the initial report, the Chief of Detectives reviews the case and assigns it to a detective. Each case is worked until every lead has been followed and the crime is solved or the case goes cold.

Through diligent, well planned investigative techniques, detectives gather, process, analyze, and preserve evidence in the effort to solve crimes. They work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of victims affected by the actions of others, and make a wide range of resources available to those victims.

The division is commanded by Capt. Morgan Bragg.

Capt. Morgan Bragg

Captain Bragg is a lifelong resident of southern West Virginia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Concord University and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from West Virginia State University.

He joined the Beckley Police Department in 2008 and has held the positions of Patrol Officer, Domestic Violence Officer, and Detective. The past 14 years of his career have been spent in the Detective Bureau, where he served as Detective, Assistant Chief of Detectives, Chief of Detectives, and now Investigative Division Commander. He is a graduate of the 285th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, and is the department’s only certified polygraph examiner. His investigative experience centers on homicide, violent crime, and cold case investigation.

As Investigative Division Commander he oversees the personnel of the Detective Bureau, Narcotics Enforcement Unit, and Crime Scene Unit. He is also responsible for crime analysis operations, policy review, applicant background investigations, and coordination of task force officers assigned to various federal and state task forces.
