About the Unit
The Domestic Violence Unit reviews every report of domestic violence filed with the Beckley Police Department, follows up on domestic incidents, serves protective orders, and provides transportation to victims. The unit works closely with the Domestic Violence Advocates at the AWAY Center and AWAY Shelter, formerly the Women’s Resource Center and Shelter.
Every attempt is made to use the resources available and provide a safe environment for all family members.

P.F.C. Seth Dickens
P.F.C. Seth Dickens has been the Domestic Violence Officer of the Beckley Police Department since February of 2025. He is a native of Raleigh County and a graduate of Shady Spring High School, class of 2011.
Dickens joined the Beckley Police Department in September of 2022 and graduated from the Police Academy in May 2023. Upon graduation he was assigned to road patrol duties. He was promoted to Patrolman First Class in September 2024 and has served on the Beckley PD Crime Scene Unit since 2024. He accepted the Domestic Violence Officer position in February 2025.

Getting Help
Domestic Violence Protection Orders
Domestic Violence Protection Orders, or DVPs, are available for the safety of you and other family members. A DVP is obtained directly from the Magistrate Office and prohibits the offender from having any contact with the people named in the order.
A Domestic Violence Advocate from the AWAY Center can help you fill out DVP paperwork, and transportation is available. To get help completing DVP forms, call 911, the Beckley Police Department at 304-256-1720, or the AWAY Center at 304-255-2559 or 304-255-4066.
The AWAY Center
The AWAY Center, Advocating a Way for Adults and Youth, was formerly known as the Women’s Resource Center. It is located at 104 Wilson St., Beckley, WV 25801.
Advocates at the AWAY Center assist any victim of domestic violence, including filing DVP paperwork and arranging residence at the AWAY Shelter. To speak with an Advocate, call 304-255-2559 or 304-255-4066.
A Safe Place to Stay
If you need a safe place for you and your children, the AWAY Shelter can accommodate you. The shelter provides clean rooms, food, clothing, toiletries, bedding, and other necessities. Transportation to the shelter is provided.
