Dean Bailey
Dean Bailey was appointed Chief of Police by Mayor Robert Rappold on April 13, 2022. Chief Bailey is a 28-year veteran of the Beckley Police Department. Chief Bailey began his career in 1997 under long-time Chief of Police Billy Cole.
Chief Bailey is a 1993 graduate of Liberty High school in Glen Daniel WV. He also attended and graduated from the 99th basic West Virginia State Police Academy. Chief Bailey is also a graduate of Marshall University with a BA in Criminal Justice. In January of 2018 Chief Bailey was selected and invited to attend the 271st session of the FBI National Academy at the FBI Academy in Quantico VA.
Chief Bailey has served in nearly every area within the department. These areas include Patrol, Narcotics and Detective Bureau. Before becoming chief, Bailey served as shift commander Lieutenant and as Captain in the Patrol Division. He was then appointed Deputy Chief of Police, which oversaw areas such as the Patrol Division, Investigative Division, Records Division, Training Division and vehicle and building maintenance.
After becoming chief, Bailey appointed the first female detective and the first female K-9 handler in the department’s history. Bailey was also part of a team that planned and overseen the construction of the Beckley Police Headquarters that was completed in 2018. Chief Bailey was instrumental in bringing back the DARE program which covers all feeder elementary schools into Park Middle School and Beckley Stratton Middle School. Chief Bailey continues to support programs such as the Citizen and Junior Police Academy’s.
